Crimson Ride Electrification & EV Research

With nearly $8 million in federal transit funds, The University of Alabama will conduct EV research and replace a quarter of its transit system buses with electric buses, reducing emissions and further positioning UA and the region as a hub for the electric vehicle ecosystem.

  • Includes unique research component focused on EV behaviors and optimization, battery performance and energy consumption, and transportation efficiency
  • Crimson Ride will replace a quarter of its transit system buses with electric buses
  • New electric charging infrastructure for the eight new buses to be installed
  • Working with Shelton State Community College to train workers to service the buses

Bipartisan Infrastructure Law 

  • UA is the only university directly receiving funding in the latest announcement from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration’s Low- and No-Emission Vehicle program.
  • This national research award is part of the United States Department of Transit Administration’s $1.66 billion initiative to invest in 150 bus fleets and facilities across the country.
